In a new study, the researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Illinois-Burnham analyzed patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia who had taken the drug sertraline. They found that sertraline was effective for treating depression in these patients.
“We have been looking at the use of bipolar disorder medication in a population of patients with schizophrenia for years,” said study lead author Dr. Jeffrey R. Baum, M. D., of the University of Illinois-Burnham in Illinois. “We’ve had many trials of this type of medication in recent years. We know that bipolar disorder is very common in the general population, so we are going to look at this as a possibility, but I don’t think we have much data.”
Sertraline is an antipsychotic drug that is approved for treating schizophrenia. It’s used to treat the symptoms of mania and depression and is commonly used to treat bipolar disorder. Sertraline is also prescribed for schizophrenia. The researchers found that patients taking the drug saw an increase in the number of manic symptoms that they had during the first weeks of treatment, and that this was in keeping with the improvements they had seen after starting treatment.
“Our analysis shows that the use of sertraline is not associated with an increase in the number of manic symptoms in this population of patients with schizophrenia,” said study co-author Dr. R. L. S. Sertraline is also used to treat bipolar disorder, according to Baum. He and his co-authors looked at data from more than 10,000 patients in the U. and Germany for more than 20 years and found that the use of this drug increased the number of manic symptoms in these patients. Sertraline is available as a generic drug and as a prescription only drug.
Sertraline is currently the only drug approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating patients with bipolar disorder. It was also the first drug in the category of antipsychotics for treating patients with bipolar disorder. The FDA approved sertraline in 1997.
Sertraline is a brand name for a drug called quetiapine. It is sold under the brand name Seroquel.
Baum and his colleagues are continuing to investigate the use of quetiapine in patients with bipolar disorder. They plan to conduct further phase II and phase III studies of sertraline in patients with bipolar disorder.
About 40 percent of patients with bipolar disorder have a manic or depressive episode and are treated with at least one antipsychotic medication. A small number of patients who have bipolar disorder also have a manic episode, though they do not have the symptoms of bipolar disorder. Sertraline has also been used off-label to treat bipolar disorder in some patients.
“When we looked at patients with bipolar disorder, we saw that they were receiving medication,” Baum said. “The goal of this study was to identify which patient groups would benefit from this medication.”
He and his colleagues studied the use of quetiapine in patients with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. They found that patients taking quetiapine saw an increase in the number of manic symptoms that they had during the first weeks of treatment, and that this was in keeping with the improvements they had seen after starting treatment.
“We did not see an increase in the number of manic symptoms in this group, and we had no significant difference between the two groups,” said study co-author Dr. Wigrok. “Our analysis shows that the use of this drug is not associated with an increase in the number of manic symptoms in this population of patients with schizophrenia, and that this was not a major concern in our study.”
Baum and his colleagues hope to conduct phase II and phase III studies of quetiapine in patients with bipolar disorder.
